Lora Davis, 97, of Peru and formerly of Macy

Lora Davis, 97, of Peru and formerly of Macy, passed away at 6:48 PM at Life Care Center of Rochester.

On January 6, 1925, Lora was the 4th child and second daughter born to Willie and Armina Cornett Deaton in Hazard, KY. Her father was a coal miner and her mother was a midwife at the coal camps.

At the age of 17, with a great work ethic, Lora started her first job as Rosie the Riveter. She and a girlfriend were bussed from Hazard to the Kingsbury Ammunition Plant. They assisted making bombs for World War II. Lora pushed the powder on carts to the lines to make bombs. Her supervisor was a charming young man, who would become her husband.

Lora and Elmer Irvin Davis were married on November 2, 1944 in Lafayette. They shared 48 years of life’s adventures. Sadly, he passed away on January 21, 1992.

Lora was a homemaker but also assisted Elmer with the farm. Their day started at 5:00 AM, milking the Holsteins and jerseys. It was followed by feeding the 500 laying hens and gathering the eggs. Lora could often be found on a tractor out in the fields. Their truck patch produced tomatoes, green beans and dill pickles. Her icicle pickles were delicious. During peach season, Lora made peach wine to share with family and friends.

The Davis’s moved to North Port, FL in 1980. Retirement was enjoyed with friends, BINGO games, crafting and hunting shells. After Elmer passed away, Lora moved back to Indiana to be closer to family.

Left to cherish the memories of Lora are many nieces and nephews, including Lora Deaton and companion Jim Golliher of Peru; Shari Simonson and husband Brian of Rochester; and William Earl Deaton of Macy; brother Walter “Bill” Deaton of Louisville, KY.

Preceding Lora in death are her parents; husband; two sisters: infant Mary Deaton, Martha Combs; seven Deaton brothers: Dewey, Lee, John, Raymond, Wallace, Pete, Earl; two siblings with the Spanish flu; two nephews: Earl Deaton Jr. and Charles Deaton.

Honoring Lora’s wishes, private family services will be held. Good Family Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
