Ned E. Halterman, 88, of Rochester

Ned E. Halterman, 88, of Rochester, passed away at 1:55 PM on Monday, October 30, 2023, at The Doctors Hospital of Bremen.

On October 24, 1935, Ned was born in Argos to Rex R. and Ruby Newcomb Halterman. Growing up he shared his childhood with two sisters and a brother. Proudly he graduated with the Class of 1953 from Richland Center High School.

At the Trinity United Methodist Church, Ned married the love of his live, Jane Ann Tobey,  on September 15, 1956. They shared 67 years of life’s adventures.  From their union came two daughters, Barbara and Bonnie and two sons, Jerry and Joe.  The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of six grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

A lifelong farmer, Ned farmed the land around the family home. With that he preferred John Deere equipment, and he was proud of his collection of unique John Deere memorabilia. With a strong work ethic, Ned retired from Dean’s Foods after 30 years of service.  Talented with technology he served Deans as a lab technician and utility relief. He had also worked at Bakers Hardware.  To relax he enjoyed watching the Carol Burnett Show.

Grandpa and Grandma Jane were their grands and the greats number one cheerleaders.  They loved to attend their school activities and sporting events.  The holidays and special family celebrations brought on spirited games of euchre led by Ned.  Grandpa always made available his secret stash of Drumsticks to the grandchildren and the greats, a wonderful way to chill on a hot summer day.  As an avid sports fan, Ned watched Notre Dame Football, the Fighting Irish Ladies Basketball and the Purdue Basketball teams. For over four decades, Ned and Jane oversaw exploration and adventure taking place in the great outdoors. They hosted family expeditions by a custom-built wagon, hauling loads of family and friends to their pond for memorable cookouts,  bonfires and story time under the starlit skies.

Known as Mr. Fix It, Ned could repair almost anything and was always there to help his family, friends and neighbors.  He enjoyed woodworking, building custom shelving,  display cases and wishing wells for his family.  Grandpa Ned was the official family supervisor.  For many years he and Jane attended the Indiana State Fair Draft Horse Show. More recently he and brother George made the visits to the Draft Shows.
