Morse M. Utter Sr., 94

Mr. Morse M. Utter Sr., 94, of Athens passed away at 7:40 AM on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Woodlawn Hospital.

 

On June 3, 1926, Morse Monroe Utter was born in Fulton County   to Robert R. and Bina E. Swartzlander Utter. Growing up he shared his childhood with a sister Marguerite and 2 brothers Cedric and Jack. In 1944 Morry graduated from Akron High School. He was a flashy guard on the basketball team and also played softball.

 

Patriotism beckoned and Morry answered the call serving with the United States Army.

 

 At the Rochester Church of God, Morse married the love of his life Miss Patricia “Pat” Jernigan, on December 20, 1954. They shared 64 years of life’s adventures. From their union came three handsome sons Morse Jr, Bill and Todd.   The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of two more generations.

 

An entrepreneur with a strong work ethic Morry owned and operated Morry's Ready Mix for many years.  He was a member of the F & AM Lodge # 79 and the Manitou VFW.  In addition to his concrete business, Morry was a passionate lifelong farmer.

 

Pat and Morry enjoyed many vacations to Branson, Missouri to enjoy the shows and sites.  They visited Ruthie and Todd in Arizona and annually traveled to southwest Michigan during peach season.  Many summer trips were a relaxing escape to the houseboat in Tennessee.   

 

Giving Pat and Morry their greatest joy was being Grandpa and Grandma Utter following the grands as Flyers and Vikings always being seated court side most Friday nights to cheer them on.  The holidays and special family celebrations was a source of making many memories.

 

Left to cherish Morry's memory are three sons, Morse Utter Jr of  Akron,   Todd R. Utter of Rochester, Jack “Bill” Utter and wife Tammy of  Akron; eight grandchildren, Amber Edmonson and husband Bryan, Ashley Utter, Lacey R. Utter, Aimee Utter, Krystal Costello and husband John,  Brandi Utter, Cody Utter and wife Shay, Jack W. Utter Jr.  15 great-grandchildren, with  several nieces and nephews.

 

Preceding Morry in death are his parents Robert and Bina Utter, beloved wife Pat on March 26, 2019, two daughters-in-law, Francis Utter and Ruthie Utter.

 

A private family graveside service and  burial will take place in the Athens Mt. Hope Cemetery.  Rev. Phil Pratt will officiate.  The US Army Honors Team  and Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard will accord military honors. Diana K. Burge, 73

Diana K. Burge, 73, Rochester, Indiana, passed away at 10:00 P.M. Monday November 23, 2020, at her residence.

She was born on September 22, 1947 in Macy, Indiana, the daughter of Thomas Holcomb and Ida (Wagoner) DuBois. She had worked as a customer service representative for NIPSCO.

Survivors include her sons, Shannon Burge, Rochester, Indiana, Jaydren Burge, Rochester, Indiana, brothers, Robert W. DuBois, Akron, Indiana, Thomas David DuBois, South Carolina, Philip M. DuBois, Oregon, Donald DuBois, Texas, Timothy E. DuBois, Peru, Indiana, Daniel L. DuBois, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Lillian Ruth Meredith, 93, of Plymouth and formerly of Warsaw

Lillian Ruth Meredith, 93, of Plymouth and formerly of Warsaw passed at 9:05 pm, Thursday, Nov. 26, 2020 at Pilgrim Manor of Plymouth, Indiana.

Lillian was born on Sept. 30, 1927 in Kosciusko County, Indiana to the late Clyde and Elsie (Douglas) Nettrouer. Lillian was a 1945 graduate of Mentone High School. She had been a homemaker and for many years a babysitter. She was a member of the Etna Green United Methodist Church where she played the piano and directed the choir. In her spare time she enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Lillian always enjoyed making candy and baking.

She is survived by sons Dennis and wife Shirley Meredith, Uniondale, Ind., Terry and wife Carolyn Meredith, Plymouth, Ind., David and wife Brenda Meredith, Akron, Ind., Jim and wife Debbie Meredith, Warsaw, Ind., Frank and wife Becky Meredith, Silver Lake, Ind., and Gary and wife Nancy Meredith, Danville, Ind., Wymond Meredith, St. Charles, Missouri; 16 Grandchildren, 2 Step Grandsons, and 24 Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Beulah Anderson, Shirley Church, and Frances Besson, and 3 Great Grandchildren.

The funeral service for Lillian will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020 at King Memorial Home 101 North Tucker Street Mentone, Indiana.

The interment will take place following the service in Harrison Center (Wooden) Cemetery, Etna Green, Indiana.

Visitation hours will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020 at King Memorial Home, Mentone, Indiana.

Masks will be required for all who are in attendance.

Donations can be made in her memory to the Etna Green United Methodist Church.

Paula F. Sloat of rural Rochester

Paula F. Sloat of rural Rochester, Indiana passed at 1:00 pm, Friday, Nov. 27, 2020 at her daughter’s residence.

Paula was born on Sept. 24, 1942 to Willis Roby and Ellen Arlene (Murray) Fairchild. She was 78 years young when she passed.

She was born and raised in Eastern Kentucky, (Johnson County) Paula,met and married the father of her two children Amos H. Litteral. They married on Dec. 28, 1957 and later divorced in 1969, but remained friends till his death.

Paula lived her life to the fullest. She loved shopping, baking, making Christmas candy, crafts, and reading. She loved and cherished her cat Shammy.

She leaves behind her daughter Gwen Liming and husband Karl; step son Jeff Giesige; grandchildren Thomas Litteral (Kathy)Marion,Ohio granddaughter,Jaime Frantom (Jeff)Akron,Indiana great grandchildren, Anthony Litteral (Christina),Marion,Ohio, Rose Litteral (Christian),Marion,Ohio, Devin Howard(Trinity) Akron,Indiana, Zander Howard; step grandson Shawn Frantom,Akron,Indiana, great great grandchildren Skarlette Litteral, and Greysyn Litteral; brothers Phillip and Michael Sadler Wabash; a special brother; Wayne and wife Avanell Litteral Falcon,Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Roby Fairchild and Arlene VanHoose; son Hank Lonnie Litteral; sisters Francis Osborne, Brenda Honeycutt, Teresa Honeycutt, Sheila Honeycutt, and Mag Luttrell,brothers Victor (Tiny) Sadler and Lee Fairchild.

A memorial service for Paula will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020 at the The House of Prayer Church 15113 State Road 114 Akron, Indiana with Pastor Danny Honeycutt officiating.

Friends and family may gather and share a time of fellowship and reflection before the service at 1:00 pm.

Robert Jeffrey "Jeff" Winstead, Sr., 62, of Francesville

Robert Jeffrey "Jeff" Winstead, Sr., 62, of Francesville, IN passed away at his home on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 following a long battle with cancer.

 

He was born on October 5, 1958 in Princeton, KY to Robert Smith and Mary Loyce [Howton] Winstead. The family moved to Northwestern Indiana when Jeff was a child.

 

On September 2, 2006 in Gatlinburg, TN, he married the love of his life, Kellie Austin. Jeff and Kellie met at the stone quarry south of Francesville and have been best friends ever since.

 

Jeff worked his entire life as a truck driver. He enjoyed working on trucks and spending time with his rescued animals. Jeff loved his grandchildren very much.

Randall Lewis Shambarger, 60, of Rochester

Randall Lewis Shambarger, 60, of Rochester, passed away Friday, November 20, 2020 at the VA Hospital of Fort Wayne.

 

In Kokomo, on December 25, 1959, Randall Lewis Shambarger was born to Charles K. Sr. and Carol A. Crousore Shambarger.  Randy graduated in 1978 from Rochester High School.  He played varsity football and baseball.

 

Patriotism beckoned and Randy answered the call serving with the United States Army.  During his service stint he was stationed in Germany. 

 

Returning stateside Randy went to work at Moore's Business Forms.  More recently he was a professional truck driver for Prime, Inc.

 

A founding member of the L.Y.M. Gang,  Randy took his leadership role seriously.   He was lifelong athlete either playing sports, watching his favorite teams or coaching youth leagues, especially when Jordan was playing.  He especially enjoyed little league umpiring or coaching. 

When the diamond was not in use, a perfectionist, Randy was the field master grooming the diamond, outfield and base paths impeccably. 

 

He was also a member of  the LeRoy Shelton American Legion #36 Rochester.

 

Left to cherish  Randy's memory are his mother, Carol A. Kyle Benjamin Button, 28, of Winamac, IN passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, November 16, 2020.  Kyle was born on September 21, 1992 in Crawfordsville, IN to Jerry Ray Button and Connie Howard.  He attended Winamac High School.  Kyle was a very hard worker and was currently employed as a welder with Grand Industrial in Logansport, IN.  He did everything he could to provide for his family and would do anything for anyone.  Kyle loved spending time with his family and friends.  He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed racing.  Kyle was a loving dad, son, and brother.  He loved with all of his heart and will be sadly missed.

Richard D. "Dick" Keller, 95,Monterey

Richard D. “Dick” Keller, 95, lifelong farmer from Monterey, IN died on Friday, November 20, 2020 at the Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac, IN. 

 

Dick was born on June 20, 1925 in Monterey to the late Edmond and Dora [Keitzer] Keller.  He attended Holy Family School in Monterey through the eighth grade and graduated from Monterey High School.  Dick served in the US Army Air Force during WWII.  On November 27, 1948, he married the love of his life, Monna Lou Vanscoyk.  She died June 15, 2005. 

 

Dick was a lifelong active member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Monterey.  He was a member of the Monterey American Legion Post #399.  Dick was loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.  He will be sadly missed.

Jeffrey Allen Smith, 56, of Rochester

Jeffrey Allen Smith, 56, of Rochester passed away at 8:00 AM on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at his residence.

 

On April 5, 1964, Jeff was born in Winamac to James E. and Marilyn S. Enyart Smith.

 

Left to cherish the memories of Jeff are his companion, Melissa Maple; three children: Leah Correll of Indianapolis, Myranda Glant and Aaron Maple both of Fort Wayne; granddaughter, Shiloh Correll; four siblings: Connie Stangle, Anna Smith both of Vincennes, Melvin Smith of Kewanna, Chad Smith of Vincennes; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Preceding Jeff in death are his parents, and two sisters, Katherine Smith and Mary Smith.

 

Graveside services for Jeff Smith will be at 1:00 PM on Monday, November 23, 2020 at the Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Rev. Danny Honeycutt will officiate.

Rev. William Harris Lawson

Rev. William Harris Lawson has gone on to join his beloved wife, Barbara, in their heavenly home after passing away from COVID-19 on November 20 in Rochester IN. 

 

Rev. Will was born in Indianapolis, IN on January 23, 1931, to William Malcolm James Lawson and Thelma Irene (Brown) Lawson.  On February 3, 1951, he married Barbara L. Tridle two years after graduation from Carmel High School.  Barbara preceded him in death in 2001 after over 50 years of marriage.  Both were convinced that their life together was planned by God from their very beginning.

Rev. Will is survived by his children: Lynn Fritz, Goshen, IN;  Loretta Lawson, Wawaka, IN;  Rev. Bill Lawson (Cheryl) Benton, KY; grandchildren, Tony Fritz (Holly); Dania Cueto, (Walter);  Kelly Weaver (Mark); Ryan Hodges (Jennifer); eleven great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.  Rev. Will and Barbara were preceded in death by several special pets including Addie Advent Lawson who was Will’s loving companion after Barbara’s death.

 

Rev. Will attended Butler University, Earlham College, Anderson University, Princeton University and Ball State University, where he earned a BS majoring in history with a minor in psychology while also earning a Social Workers Certificate.  He served an internship in Psychological Counseling at Logansport State Hospital.  Rev. Will earned a Master of Divinity at Christian Theological Seminary.  In addition, he was awarded a Certificate in International Ecumenical Affairs from Mansfield College, Oxford University, Oxford, England.

He served four years in the Indiana National Guard as a Communication Sergeant; attended Army Officers training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; and served the Air Force as a Chaplain Major.

He entered the Methodist Ministry in June 1960 and was ordained an Elder on May 28, 1970. He assisted the church merger with the EUB church in 1968, serving in the areas of Church Relations to Hospitals, Homes, Stewardship, Building and Location and Nominations. He was a delegate to the United Nations representing the Methodist Church during the Nicaragua crisis. His record of service in Indiana Methodist and United Methodist Churches included, Fairview, Albany Bethel, Perkinsville, Beall’s Chapel,  New Burlington, Anderson Bethel, Fort Wayne Broadway, Fort Wayne First Wayne Street, Gaston, Fort Wayne South Wayne, York, Gas City, Otterbein, Mentone, Talma, Webb Chapel, Ebenezer, Burton, and Richland Center.

Following retirement in 1993, he served several churches as interim pastor and as a certified mentor to those seeking Ministerial Credentials in the United Methodist Church, and was the Pastor Emeritus of Rochester Trinity United Methodist Church. He was certified with the United Methodist Church and U. S. Air Force as a chaplain with the rank of Major.

He served as a counselor at Logansport State Hospital, ambulance driver, and staff chaplain at Anderson Community Hospital. As chaplain at Kosciusko County Hospital, he served as Disaster Post Trauma Counselor for the hospital, EMS, police and fire workers. He also was a consultant for the Handbook of the Indiana State Police Academy

Rev. Will and Barb traveled and studied in the former Eastern Soviet Block, Western Europe, Far East, Western Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, Central America, Canada and even the United States. They also hosted trips to the Holy Land and Europe and arranged continuing education trips for the former Wesleyan Methodist Church Marion College. Rev. Will’s first major travels were for Ball State University to establish Continuing Education Programs in eight Western Europe cities. While traveling in Scotland and England they were able to trace Will’s ancestors back to the Third Century and spent overnight in a York, England parsonage owned by the Primitive Methodist Church whose founder was a Rev. Wm. Lawson. Another famous person in the family line is Alfred W. Lawson, founder of Lawsonomy, Direct Credit Society, Lawsonomy University and the inventor, manufacturer of the first airliner. ?

Rev. Will was inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame, honoring the Lawson Aircraft Company. He was a private, instrument rated airplane pilot and a retired Major of the U.S. Air Force attached to the Civil Air Patrol specializing in Search and Rescue. He was the former State Chaplain of the Air Force Association; former treasurer and board member of the Lawrence D. Bell Aircraft Museum; a former member of the Mentone Flying Club, and a member of the Bell Chapter of the Air Force Association

Rev. Will was an active member in the Lions Clubs International and served as Club President, Zone Chairman, Vice Governor, District Governor, State Membership Development Chairman, Indiana International Commission Chairman and President of the Board of Trustees of Indiana University Cancer Control. He is the recipient of the International Lions President Certificate of Appreciation for Humanitarian Efforts and is a Melvin Jones Fellow. He traveled with his Parade Race Car for the Indiana Racing Lions. He was a former officer in Kiwanis, Optimist, Rotary, DeMolay, and Young Republicans.  He was a member of Carmel Masonic Lodge, Carmel Order of Eastern Star, Anderson York Rite, and Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite.

Rev. Will and Barbara designed, built and retired to their dream home in Gregory Farm Village in Rochester, IN.    He was the organizer and president of the Gregory Farm Village Neighborhood Association.  He was a member of the Rochester RSVP and Board of Directors of the Fulton County Council on Aging.   At his 75th Birthday Celebration, the mayor proclaimed his birthday as Rev. Will Lawson, Sr. Day in Rochester.

A family graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 24 at in the Masonic Garden of The Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Indianapolis, Indiana at 2 pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Robert "Bob" R. Bridge, 95

Mr. Robert R. Bridge, 95, of Rochester passed away at 8:55 AM on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at Woodlawn Hospital.

 

On October 14, 1925, Robert Rizer Bridge was born in White County to Harry Albert and Gavis Baer Bridge. He was one of four children, sharing his childhood with a sister and two brothers.  Bob graduated with the class of 1943 from Royal Center High School.

 

Following high school, patriotism beckoned and Bob answered the call serving in 325th Glider Infantry, 82nd Airborne during World War II from November 1943 thru January 1946. His service stints included duty in England, Holland, Belgium, France and Germany.  Bob fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium; Battle of Ruhr Valley, Germany and occupation duty following war in Berlin, Germany.

 

On January 23, 1947, Bob and Martha C. Weddle were married in Johnson County.  After 30 years of marriage she passed away.

 

In Rochester, on March 31, 1978, Bob and Carol J. Coplen were married. They have shared 42 years of life’s adventures.

 

A scientist and expert in livestock reproduction, Bob was active in cattle artificial insemination and semen sales for nearly forty years before selling his business, Genetics Plus, Inc. in January of 1991.  Bob and Carol were both active in district and state Holstein activities through 1994. Both were named honorary life members of the Indiana Holstein Association in 1990.

 

Bob was active in politics, government and played a vital role with the Democrat Party from grassroots, state and national levels. He served on the  Rochester Water Board; Fulton County Council 1974-77; Rochester City Board of Public Works & Safety 1992-1995.  Bob was Area 5 Older Hoosier of the Year 1998 and a delegate to Governor’s Conference on Aging. He was named one of 16 Hoosiers of the Year, honored by Gov. Frank O’Bannon, Oct. 1998. Bob was appointed to Fulton County Election Board 1999 through 2005. He was a member of Congressman Joe Donnelly’s Veterans Advisory Committee 2006-2012. In 2016 Bob was  recognized as  Democrat Man of the Year.

 

Community service and volunteerism was another forte’ of Bob through his work with the Rochester Lions Club; Fulton County Historical Society, R.S.V.P and other local agencies.

 

Bob’s memberships include First Christian Church of Rochester, Moose Lodge; a life member of both American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars;  Rochester Lions Club; Honorary Life Member of Indiana Holstein Association; Rochester/Lake Manitou Chamber of Commerce, 325th Glider Infantry Association and 82nd Airborne Association. Secretary of 325th GIR 1998-2017, Sgt of Guard for military funerals- American Legion and VFW. Member of Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard until 2017. He was a member of the Ft Wayne Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in April 2016.

 

 

Bob served 1978-2004 on Fulton County Housing Authority Board of Directors; 8 years on Four County Mental Health Board of Directors; Fulton County Draft Board (‘60’s- Vietnam War). He worked with United Ministries Christmas Basket Program and was awarded a Life Membership to American Legion Post 36. Bob received American Legion 40 & 8 service award in 1995. In December 1998 named Honorary Chef de Gare by Voiture 729 (2nd such award in 74-year history of Voiture) and Chef de Gare 2004-2005. He was presented the pinnacle award in Lionism, the Melvin Jones Award in 1996-97 by Rochester Lions Club. Bob was named recipient of 1998 Community Service Award by   Rochester & Lake Manitou Chamber of Commerce.

 

 

Left to cherish  Bob's memory are his wife Carol, two children, Stephen Bridge and wife Catherine of Indianapolis, Nancy Waggoner and husband Ted of Rochester; four granddaughters, Gretchen Anderson and husband Scott of Brownsburg,  Jeanette Habing and husband Philip of Carmel, Theresa and My-Linh Bridge of Indianapolis; three step-grandchildren, Annie Dust and husband Silas, Joseph Lutholtz all of Indianapolis, Thomas Lutholtz of Wisconsin; step great-granddaughters, Harper and Cecilia Dust of Indianapolis, Isabella Gabavics-Anderson of Wisconsin, four great-granddaughters, Nora, Caroline, Molly and Violet Habing of Carmel; two great-grandsons, Tyler and Ryzer Anderson of Brownsburg and several nieces and nephews.

 

Preceding Bob in death are his parents, first wife Martha on Nov. 11, 1976, son John Charles “Jack” Bridge on May 13, 2016, a sister Kay Humphrey, and the two Bridge brothers Dudley and James.

 

A private family celebration of the life of Mr. Robert Rizer Bridge will be held in the Good Family Funeral Home. Pastor Mike VanHeyningen will officiate. Burial will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Fulton County Veteran’s Honor Guard and the United States Army Honors Team.

Robert Lee Howard-Button, 35, of Winamac

Robert Lee Howard-Button, 35, of Winamac, IN passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, November 11, 2020 from a heart attack at Advocate Trinity Hospital in Chicago, IL.  He was born on September 15, 1985 in Knox, IN and was the beloved son of Jerry Ray and Sharon [Howard] Button.  He was fondly known as “Big Bob” or “Tiny” but many just knew him as “Bob”. 

 

Bob graduated from Winamac High School in 2004 and was currently self-employed.  He was an avid dirt track racer and fan.  Bob was a friend to everyone on and off the track.  He enjoyed the outdoors and working on anything with wheels.  More than anything, Bob loved spending time with his friends and family.   He loved his fiancée, Nicole, and his daughter, Raeleigh, who was the light of his life. 

 

Although he left us way too soon, Bob has left us with wonderful memories that will last forever.

Carolyn Sue Shafer, 83, of Tippecanoe

Carolyn Sue Shafer, 83, of Tippecanoe, Indiana passed at 9:30 am, Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020 at her residence.

She was born on May 21, 1937 in Warsaw, Indiana to the late Harold Ed and Kathryn (Griewank) Ward. She married on June 29, 1957 in Tippecanoe to Harold L. “Red” Shafer, he preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 2007.

She was a 1955 graduate of Tippecanoe High School where she was salutatorian of her class. She then attended, what is now, Ball State University. She and her husband were owners of Niff-Corr of Tippecanoe, where she had been a secretary for many years. She enjoyed painting, quilting, and cooking. She always looked forward to the time she got to spend with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons Harold “Hal” and wife Zulema Shafer, Kent and wife Lori Shafer, and Jon and wife Denise Shafer all of Tippecanoe, grandchildren Jeannie Miller, Sarah Kahle, Lena Chapman, Brooke Price, Aaron Shafer, Erik Shafer, Joshua Shafer, and Lucas Shafer, and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Red.

Following her wishes a private family service will be held at King Memorial Home 101 North Tucker Street Mentone, Indiana with Pastor Aaron Talbert officiating.

The interment will take place in the Mentone Cemetery, Mentone, Indiana.

Opal Manns, 88, of rural Akron

Opal Manns, 88, of rural Akron, Indiana passed at 9:45 am, Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020 at Woodlawn Hospital of Rochester, Indiana.

Opal was born on Sept. 10, 1932 in Prestonsburg, Kentucky to the late Earl and Icie (Adams) Smith. She married on June 11, 1948 in Salyersville, Kentucky to Carmel Manns, who preceded her in death on May 16, 2019.

Opal was a homemaker as well as working for 17 years for Peabody Retirement Community and 17 years as custodian for Sweetwater Assembly of God both of North Manchester. She also was known to help folks who needed home health care.

She was a member of the Sweetwater Assembly of God of North Manchester. She loved cooking food for everyone and some to take home. She made wonderful pies and made a special pie for everyone. She always enjoyed family and the more they were with her the happier she was. She never forgot anyone on anniversaries, birthdays, and holidays.

She is survived by daughters Connie and husband John Malott of Akron, Ind. and Vickie and husband Rodney Whitaker of Akron, Ind., sons Darrel Manns of Akron, Ind. and Doug and wife Joanna Manns of Akron, Ind., grandchildren Christopher, Joshua, Sarah, Matthew, Jennifer, Lori, Logan, Jessica, Wesley, Kiley, and Teri, 36 Great Grandchildren, 8 Great Great Grandchildren, and a brother Paul and wife Carol Smith of Claypool, Ind.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carmel, brothers Tom and Curtis Smith.

A private family service will be held at Hartzler Funeral Home 305 West Rochester Street Akron, Indiana. The service will be available virtually after 11:00 am, Monday, Nov. 9 on the Photos & Videos tab on hartzlerfuneralservices.com.

A public service will take place at 12:30 pm, Monday, Nov. 9, 2020 at Silver Creek Cemetery, Silver Lake, Indiana with Pastor Jeremy Jones officiating.

Deborah Lynn Bostwick, age 68, of Akron

Deborah Lynn Bostwick, age 68 of Akron died on Friday, November 6, 2020 at 3:45 p.m. at her residence.

 

She was born on February 25, 1952 to James and Geraldine (Overmyer) Decker.  Deborah graduated in 1970 from LaSalle High School, South Bend, Indiana.

 

Deborah married Donald L. Bostwick, Jr. on October 12, 1971 in South Bend, Indiana.

She was a homemaker and telephone switchboard operator at Culver Military Academy.  Deborah was also a child advocate and CASA director.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rochester, Indiana.  She has lived in Akron for seven years moving here from Rochester.

 

Surviving Deborah is her daughter: Jennifer (spouse Marc) Randall of Akron and her son-in-law Scott Alter of Fort Wayne; (2) brothers: Jim Decker of Plymouth and Joe Decker of Pennsylvania; (2) sisters: Diane (spouse Michael) Lindh of Pennsylvania and Mary Decker of Valparaiso; (9) grandchildren and (1) great-grandchild.

 

Preceding Deborah in death are her parents, her husband Donald Bostwick (deceased in 2012), a son Jeromy and a daughter Jaime.

 

There will be a Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rochester (TBA) officiated by Father Daniel Shine.  After cremation, she will be buried in the Akron IOOF Cemetery in Akron, Indiana.

 

A Celebration of Life for Deborah will be held in the spring, 2021 at the Pike Memorial Park (Akron Town Park) in Akron, Indiana.

Gary Lee "Spike" Bowers, 56

Gary Lee "Spike" Bowers, 56, of  Marshtown (Kewanna) passed away at 10:28 PM on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at Lutheran Hospital of Fort Wayne from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

On July 27, 1964, Gary Lee was born in Wauseon OH to Keith and Sherian Bingman Bowers.     In 1983, he graduated from Rochester High School.

An American sportsman, Gary hunted deer and trapped muskrat, fox, coon and beaver.  He was a huge Ohio State University fan, always following his beloved Buckeyes with great intensity.   To relax he listened to heavy metal.

Ruth E. Utter, 58

Mrs. Ruth E. Utter, 58, of Rochester passed away with her devoted husband Todd at her bedside at 1:12 AM, Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at Woodlawn Hospital.

On March 27, 1962, Ruth Elizabeth Beeker, was born in Jersey City, NJ.  She was the treasured daughter of James and Sylvia Przbysz Beeker.  Growing up she shared her childhood with two brothers.  At the age of 5, the family moved to Arizona.  In 1980, Ruth graduated from Apollo High School in Glendale, AZ.

In Phoenix, Arizona, Ruth married the love of her life, Mr. Todd Robert Utter on September 14, 1991. They have shared 29 years of life’s adventures. Quietly they dedicated their lives to each other, always together whether working in their garden or taking s ride to town.  

As a homemaker, Ruth cherished time with her family and enjoyed visiting her parents in Phoenix.  She relished the time she spent playing with Tasha Marie, her K9 kid. She enjoyed the fresh air and being outside to take care of the garden. When the harvest arrived, Todd and Ruth shared the produce with family and special friends. The Chicago PD television show was a favorite, but she enjoyed most exciting crime and criminal shows.

For her daily devotions, Ruth watched Joyce Meyer Ministries.  She also owned a small library of Meyer's devotional books.  On Sundays, she worshiped with Adrian Rogers or Charles Stanley.

Left to cherish Ruth's memory are her husband Todd, daughter Krystal Costello and husband John, parents James and Sylvia Beeker all of Phoenix, AZ two brothers Jimmy Beeker of Memphis, TN, Danny Beeker and wife Karen of Phoenix, AZ,   father-in-law Morse Utter Sr, two brothers-in-law Morse Utter Jr and Bill Utter and wife Tammy, her canine companion Tasha Marie the German Shepherd and several nieces and nephews.

Nelda Rhodes, 87

Nelda Mae Rhodes, 87, passed away at 1:57 AM on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at Millers Merry Manor of Peru.

On April 13, 1933, Nelda was born in Chesterton to Maurice and Marcella Lines.

Nelda and Bobby Gene Rhodes were married in Chesterton on July 15, 1951. They shared 52 years of life’s adventures. Sadly, he passed away on January 25, 2003. Their union produced two daughters and a son. Two more generations have been added to the family tree with 13 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

Starting every morning at 5:00 AM, Nelda began her day with reading her Bible.  Nelda was thankful for the blessings God had bestowed on her family. As a homemaker, Nelda was an avid baker, making Christmas cookies and popcorn balls and often cooking and baking with Kathy. Being outdoors and spending time in nature was always enjoyed. She was a member of the Carpenter House of Kokomo.

Left to cherish  Nelda's memory are two daughters, Kathy Musall and husband Dennis of Mexico, Vicky Hines and husband Roger of Rochester, a son, Rick Rhodes and wife Becky of Sharpsville, 13 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren, a brother, Larry Lines and wife Alberta of Chesterton.

Preceding Nelda in death are her parents Maurice and Marcella Lines, beloved husband Bobby Gene Rhodes and infant daughter Rhonda Kay.

James E. "Jim" Kuhn, Sr., 85

James E. “Jim” Kuhn, Sr., 85, of Winamac, IN passed away at 9:30 AM on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at the Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac.   He was born on June 1, 1935 in Winamac to the late Jonas M. and Genevieve R. [Weaver] Kuhn.  On June 16, 1956, Jim married the late Shirley A. Schramm at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Winamac.  They raised four children, James, Jr., Debra, Diana, and David whom they supported in all their 4H and school sports endeavors.  After their children graduated from high school, Jim and Shirley hosted 5 exchange students over the years; two students from Japan and three students from Germany.  They traveled to Germany to visit one exchange student, Rapheal, in Germany years later. 

 

Jim was a lifelong farmer and was retired from Plymouth Tube in Winamac.  After retirement, he worked at Olson Auctions in Winamac for several years.  He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Logansport, IN.  Jim was an active member of the Northern Indiana Power from the Past and longtime manager of the Community Center at the Pulaski County Fairgrounds.    He enjoyed spending time at the Von Tobel Senior Center at Pulaski County Human Services in Winamac.   

 

Jim was a kind and friendly man who did not know a stranger.  He loved his family, especially spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Adrian Paul Miller, 95

Adrian Paul Miller, 95, lifelong businessman from Winamac, IN passed away at 7:10 AM Sunday, November 1, 2020 at his home in Pulaski, IN surrounded by family.  He was born at the family home in Winamac on November 16, 1924 to the late Frank Anthony and Cecelia Christine [Gilsinger] Miller.   In 1942, Adrian graduated from Winamac High School.  Adrian served as a paratrooper in the US Army during WWII with the 101st Airborne.  He served in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.  He was honorably discharged in 1944.   Adrian was a member of the Winamac VFW Post #1728 and Winamac American Legion Post #71.   He was proud to receive a Quilt of Valor several years ago. 

 

On November 19, 1955, Adrian married Mary Joan Greger at St. Ann’s Catholic in Indianapolis, IN.  She passed away October 5, 1995.

 

On February 24, 1977, Adrian married Anna Belle [Morris] Jackson at St. Ann's Catholic Church.  She passed away November 30, 2005

 

Adrian was a co-owner of Miller’s Department Store in downtown Winamac.    He was a former member and past president of the Winamac Chamber of Commerce and was also a former member of the Winamac Kiwanis and Winamac Rotary.  Adrian was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pulaski, IN as well as the Winamac Knights of Columbus.   

 

Adrian loved the game of baseball.  In his youth, he was drafted by the St. Louis Browns (later known as the Baltimore Orioles).   Throughout his life, he enjoyed coaching little league, supporting local teams, and teaching his children about the game.  He was an avid bowler and cherished fishing trips to Minnesota.

 

Adrian was a caring man who loved his family very much.    He especially loved when his family got together for events and holidays.  Adrian will be sadly missed by so many.
