Larry D. Arven, 83, of rural Rochester

Larry D. Arven, 83, of rural Rochester, passed at 4:25 am, Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023 at his residence.

Larry was born on March 22, 1939 in Rochester, Ind. to the late Victor and Virginia (Knott) Arven. He married on March 26, 1961 in Rochester, Ind. to Mary Craft, she survives.

He retired from Torx, formerly Indiana Metal, of Rochester after 43 years. He was a longtime member of Pheasants Forever. He loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed all kinds of fishing, ice fishing and on the river, but especially at his pond. He loved to maintain his pond and ride UTV’s.

He is survived by his wife Mary Arven of Rochester, Ind.; children Brent and wife Stephanie Arven of Rochester and Virginia and husband Doug Clampitt of Atwood; grandchildren Brandon Arven, Andrea and husband Roger Reed, Bradlee Arven, Noah Clampitt, and Neil Clampitt; and great grandchildren Audrey Arven, Sadie Reed, and Cora Reed.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Victor and Virginia Arven, sisters Carol Sundheimer and Linda Whetstone, and brothers Victor Arven Jr., Elbert Paul Arven and Dick Arven.

Following his wishes, no services will be held.

Charles Robert "Bob" Vanata, 79, of Fulton, and formerly of Lakeland

Charles Robert “Bob” Vanata, 79, of Fulton, and formerly of Lakeland, and The Villages, Florida passed at 5:30 am, Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023 at Lutheran Hospital of Ft. Wayne, Ind.

Bob was born on Aug. 25, 1943 in Logansport, Ind. to the late Clifford and Josephine (Sanders) Vanata. He married on March 21, 1981 by Rev. Hapner in Fulton, Ind. to Elaine Sue Campbell Johnson, she survives.

He was a 1961 graduate of Fulton High School. He was a construction supervisor for Cone Construction of Florida and also worked for Burton Construction of Rochester. He enjoyed tractors, gardening, watching RFD on television, and his Little Red Express.

He is survived by his wife Sue Vanata of Fulton; daughter Lesley and husband Troy Corn of Rochester; son Christopher and wife Christine Vanata of Akron; step daughter Nicole and husband George Grandstaff of South Riding, Virginia; step son Nathan and wife Nicole Johnson of Rochester; 11 Grandchildren; 31 Great Grandchildren; and his dogs Lucy, Ringo, Dusty.

Following his wishes, no visitation or services will be held.

Billy G. Fritz, 84, of Lafayette

Billy G. Fritz, 84, of Lafayette, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Creasy Springs Health Campus in Lafayette. 

 

He was born on July 1, 1938 in Winamac, IN to the late Raymond E. and Opal R. [White] Fritz. 

 

Billy graduated from Pulaski High School. 

 

On February 23, 1974, he married the love of his life, Barbara A. Bisher in Monticello, IN. 

 

Billy owned and operated Bill’s Auto Body in rural Beaver Township for many years.  From working for others to working for himself, he did body work for nearly 40 years. 

 

Billy was a member of Northern Indiana Power from the Past.  He enjoyed rebuilding and displaying antique engines. 

 

Billy enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.  He will be sadly missed.

Roberta "Bobbi" Lee (Reynolds) Keller-Hasko

Roberta “Bobbi” Lee (Reynolds) Keller-Hasko, 84 of Culver, Indiana and formerly of the Argos community passed away February 16, 2023, at 10:50 p.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor, Culver, Indiana.

 

On May 12, 1938, in Murphysboro, Illinois she was born to Lester Reynolds and Helen (Eason) Reynolds. She moved to the Argos community in 1970 from Beloit, Wisconsin.

 

On January 15, 1955, in Murphysboro, Illinois she married Darrell Keller and together they shared the next 26 years before his passing in1981. She spent nearly 23 years with her long-time companion James “Jim” Herrin who preceded her on September 25, 2016.

 

Bobbi worked in the office at Del-Monte and HNP Industries both of Plymouth, Indiana. She was a lifetime member of the Argos American Legion Auxiliary, Post#68; and bowled on several Bowling Leagues.

 

Bobbi is survived by her Daughters – Vicki Powell and husband John of Fort Myers, Florida; and Judy Keller of Argos, Indiana

 

3 Grandsons     3 Great Granddaughters and 3 Great Grandsons

Ralph D. Muse 68, Rochester

Ralph D. Muse 68, Rochester, passed away at 6:38 P.M. Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester, Indiana.

He was born on June 18, 1954 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Denver and Essie (Daulton) Muse. On September 30, 1972 in Fowler, Indiana, he married Gwen Pratt and she survives.

Ralph had worked for many years at the former General Transfer before retiring from the Rochester Street Department. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, working on cars and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Gwen Muse, Rochester, Indiana, grandson, Michael (Kylise) Muse, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, mother, Essie Muse, Rochester, Indiana, brother, Richard (Lisa) Muse, Burnettsville, Indiana, serval nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, son, Tony Muse, brothers, Robert Muse and Roger Muse.

Jolly E. Vaughn, 87, of Rochester

Jolly E. Vaughn, 87, of Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 12:30 PM on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Hickory Creek of Rochester.

On March 19, 1935, in Wilson, Arkansas, Jolly Elwood Vaughn was born, the fifth child of Orville and Maude Cannon Vaughn. Growing up he shared his childhood with twelve siblings. Proudly he graduated from Wilson High School with the Class of 1953.

Jolly and Glenda Faye Bailey were married on August 13, 1957 in DeSoto County, Mississippi.   They have shared  65 years of life’s adventures. From their union came four beautiful daughters, Candy, Terry, Pamela and Kisia. Two more generations have been added to the family tree with the blessings of  15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

With a keen eye for decorating, Jolly was the owner of J.E. Vaughn Painting Service.  Jolly enjoyed being outdoors. Going hunting or throwing a line in his favorite watering hole was a great way to relax.  Grandpa Jolly cherished the time spent with his grandchildren.

Left to cherish Jolly's memory are his wife Glenda; three daughters: Terry Norrell and husband Kurt of Cuero, TX, Pamela G. Gagnon and husband Robert of Rochester, Kisia Ulery and husband Rod of Rochester; 15 grandchildren: Mark, Renee, Chad, Colton, Jamie, Joshua, Jonas, Sam, Andrea, Phillip, Ryan, Neal, Kyle, Kody, Allison; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Linda Vaughn of Wilson, AK;  two brothers: Gary Vaughn and Billy Vaughn and wife  Nadine “Dean”  all of Wilson, AK;  and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jolly in death are his parents; daughter Candy Denny; four sisters: Carol, Peggy, Ann and LaVerne; five brothers: Ted, Clarence, Orville Jr, Winston, and Jerry.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Jolly E. Vaughn will be held at a later date. 

Jeannie Winstead, 75, of Rochester

Jeannie Winstead, 75, of Rochester, passed away at 4:50 PM on Tuesday, February 13, 2023 at Lutheran Hospital of Fort Wayne.

On June 23, 1947, Jean Suzanne was born in Chicago to Robert C. and Elizabeth M. Underhill Potthoff. Proudly, she graduated from St. Sabina Catholic High School.

Jeannie and Jackie J. Shuey were married in Rochester on July 20, 1968. They shared 24 years of life’s adventures. Sadly, he passed away on March 19, 1992.

On December 24, 1993, Jeannie and Robert C. “Bob” Winstead were married. He passed away on April 17, 2006.    The Winstead’s loved to  go camping  and  take a ride on his motorcycle.

Jeannie enjoyed garage sales and  spending time with friends. She loved playing cards and enjoyed dancing to the “oldies” and was a fun lady. Her door was always open to anyone in need. She loved everyone unconditionally and it showed. Jeannie was a Christian and had amazing faith in God.  Blood didn’t always equal family to her. Jeannie had so much “family”, extra kids and grandkids.

As a seamstress, Jeannie worked at Hart Schaffner Marx until it closed. Jeannie was a CNA  and cared for many while working in home health care. She was a member of the Church of God of Kewanna and the Red Hat Society.

Left to cherish the memory of Jeannie are five children: Heather Goad and companion Lisa Mann of Indianapolis, Tammy Winstead of Rochester, Bobby Shuey of  Rochester, Dixie Lewis of Kokomo, Walter Hartman of Rochester;  five  granddaughters and 14 great grandchildren; brother James Potthoff and his wife Renita of Montery; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jeannie in death are her parents; husband; daughter Stacey Shuey at the age of 7; son Jackie J. “JJ” Shuey; sister, Kathleen Fisher; and  four Potthoff brothers: Robert “Bob”, Thomas “Tom”, William “Bill” and Hugh.

Private family services will be held.  The Good Family Funeral Home of Rochester has been entrusted with the arrangements. Interment will be in the Citizen’s Cemetery.

Dena F. Lawrence 76, Akron

Dena F. Lawrence 76, Akron, passed away at 6:22 A.M. Monday, February 6, 2023, at her residence.

She was born on November 23, 1946 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of James Robert and Edith Opal (Petty) Verhines. She married Bishop Robert Ritter Sr. in 1969. They later divorced. On September 6, 2003, in Rochester, Indiana, she married Jimmy S. Lawrence. He preceded her in death.

Dena worked at Hart, Schaffner and Marx for over twenty years until her retirement. She graduated from Ivy Tech Community College with a degree in business. She belonged to the Pentecostal Church, having attended Sanctuary of Praise and New Beginnings Glorious Church, where she loved playing the piano. She enjoyed sewing, making costumes for her grandchildren on Halloween, singing, and playing the organ. Dena also enjoyed dancing with the Rochester square dancers and was known for her excellent tasting Hershey’s fudge. Most of all she loved spending time with her family, listening to gospel music and harmonizing with her daughter.

Brenda "Bren" Elston, 59, of Medaryville

Brenda “Bren” Elston, 59, of Medaryville, passed away surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

 

She was born on November 25, 1963 to Ernest D. and Krystal K. [Critser] Woodard, in Gary, In. Bren graduated from West Central High School in 1981.

 

She married Brad Elston on October 3, 1987 in Medaryville. They affectionately referred to one another as “baby” for over 37 years.

 

Bren enjoyed crafting and flower gardening. In her younger years, Bren enjoyed horseback riding and barrel racing. Her favorite holiday was Christmas when she would turn the house into the North Pole. Some of the best family memories were made while camping, fishing, and spending time at the pool. Her grandchildren will always remember their Nanna singing “You Are My Sunshine” and the many ways in which she reminded them that they were her sunshine.

 

Bren had worked at Federal Mogul and most recently at the Pulaski County Surveyor’s Office. While she enjoyed her time at these jobs, her true passion was being a devoted Wife, Mother, and Nanna. Bren loved her family very much. She could light up a room with her personality and was never shy to tell you like it was. Bren will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Carla G. Dutchess 97, North Manchester, and formerly of Rochester

Carla G. Dutchess 97, North Manchester, and formerly of Rochester, passed away at 12:20 P.M. Monday, February 6, 2023, at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester.

She was born on August 16, 1925 in Kosciusko County, Indiana, the daughter of Homer A. and Ercie (Oplinger) Lucas. She graduated from Claypool High School in 1943, from Manchester College with a Bachelors Degree in 1947 and received her Master’s Degree from Indiana University in 1958. On July 23, 1966 in Rochester, Indiana, she married Lloyd A. Dutchess. He preceded her in death on May 30, 1994.

Mrs. Dutchess taught Business and English for over forty years in High Schools in, Monroe, Indiana, Twelve Mile, Indiana, Paris, France (U.S. Dependents School), Rochester, Indiana, and Oak Hill High School in Converse, Indiana. She was a member of Community Presbyterian Church, Rochester, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Delta Pi Epsilon, and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. In her leisure time she enjoyed reading and traveling.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Chris Johnson, Curtis Harms, Laura Tomlin, David Devore, eight great nieces and nephews and eight great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Hannah C. (Lucas) Rutenberg, brother-in-law, Arthur Rutenberg, and niece, Kathleen Soupley.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 12, 2023, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, Indiana. Friends may call one hour prior to service Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester, Indiana.

Nancy Caywood 81, Rochester

Nancy Caywood 81, Rochester, passed away at 6:43 A.M. Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at her residence.

She was born on September 20, 1941 in Montpelier, Ohio, the daughter of Clarence and Beatrice (Shupp) March. On April 26, 1974, Nancy married Robert Caywood in a beautiful setting in Las Vegas, Nevada. For over forty- eight years, Nancy and Bob shared and built a wonderful life together. Together they owned Bob Caywood and Associates Real Estate office in Rochester, Indiana, before retiring to Sebring, Florida. After enjoying over twenty years of fun, friends, family and neighborhood fish fries in Sebring, Bob and Nancy returned to Rochester in 2005.

Nancy’s greatest joy in life was her husband, and she displayed that love with her sweet disposition, her delicious cooking, and by providing a lovely home for them to share with friends and family. Nancy was loved by everyone who met her, she touched many lives with her unselfish and giving ways, often cooking “a little extra” dinner or dessert to share with others. She is sorely missed and will live forever in the hearts of family and friends. She had also been a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Elk’s Club and Moose Lodge.

Survivors include her husband, Robert D. “Bob” Caywood, Rochester, Indiana, step-daughters, Debbie (Richie) Magan, Florida, Tammie Caywood, Rochester, Indiana, daughter-in-law, Vicki Caywood, Arizona, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister, Linda Smith, Bryan, Ohio, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Joseph Caywood, brothers, Jack March, Thomas March, James March and Richard March, sisters, Barbara Rupp and Mary Rupp, and step-daughter, Vickie Parsons.

Scott Allen Nieb, 52 of Plymouth

Scott Allen Nieb, 52 of Plymouth, Indiana passed away on February 2, 2023, at 11:52 a.m. at his residence.

 

On May 19, 1970, in Niles, Michigan he was born to Brian L. Nieb and Diana S. (Overmyer) Nieb. Scott has lived in Marshall County, Indiana since 1988.

 

Scott was a graduate of Argos High School with the class of 1988.

Steven M. Reed, 68, of Logansport

Steven M. Reed, 68, of Logansport, passed away peacefully at 12:45 a.m., Thursday, January 26, 2023 at Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru.

 

Born on April 30, 1954 in Peru, he was the son of the late Edward and Marlene (Brower) Reed.

 

He was a 1972 Logansport High School graduate and a U.S. Army veteran.

 

On July 18, 1981 he married Holly K. Tucker, she survives.

 

He formerly worked at Wilson Foods for over 20 years and then retired from Chrysler Corporation after over 20 years.


Steve was fun, hard working, and helpful. He was also a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He genuinely treasured his loved ones and grandkids and wanted to see their happiness and success. He enjoyed hearing about his grandkids interests and hobbies, often asking how they were
doing even while in the middle of his own fight with cancer.


He loved nature and all types of outdoor activities. He enjoyed sitting out in his woods by the fire in his self-built “campsite.” He liked taking walks on the River Bluff Trail or down the country road, bicycling, canoeing (with an occasional unplanned swim ;), shooting sports, mowing the grass, tinkering in the
garage, grilling out, and riding his motorcycle to see his grandkids. He loved making milkshakes, drinking coffee with his sweets, and munching on kettle corn and sharing those things with his kids and grandkids.


In his life, Steve made some great friends, establishing the routine of playing cards in his younger years, going to Steak n’ Shake after a work shift and having New Years Eve celebrations with special friends, Dave and Kathi. He truly cherished his time with these friends.

 

Survivors include his wife, Holly Reed, of Logansport, daughter, Robyn Maish (Derek) of Rossville, son, Derek Reed (Emily) of Logansport, sisters, Gwen Frank of South Carolina and Traci Collins of Kokomo, several nieces and nephews, and grandchildren, Olivia, Elsie, Whitley, Archer, and Zeke Reed and Fynn,
Lyris, Nova, and Truett Maish.

 

He was also preceded in death by brothers, Ed, David and Jim Reed and sister, Melissa Reed.

 

Per Steve’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service, but there will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.

Betty J. Shorter, 80, of Winamac

Betty J. Shorter, 80, of Winamac, passed away peacefully at 6:45 p.m., Monday, January 30, 2023 at Hickory Creek of Winamac.

Born on May 26, 1942 in Monticello, she was the daughter of the late Merle and Wanetta (Allen) Ezra.

She was a 1960 Winamac High School graduate.

On November 5, 1960 she married James “Jim” Shorter.  He preceded her in death on December 16, 2020.

Many knew her best for the sewing and alterations she provided as the owner and seamstress of Betty’s Snip & Sew Barn. She was self taught in her trade and provided sewing classes to the community over the years, including local 4-H clubs. She enjoyed spending many summers teaching her granddaughters to sew as well.

She attended the First Christian Church in Winamac.  Betty enjoyed crocheting, quilting, cross stitch, reading, watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, completing puzzles, and spending time with family and friends. Instilled from her parents at a young age she was an avid card player. She never turned down the chance to play cards or board games, passing this love on to her kids and grandkids. It would not be a family get together without gathering around the table playing multiple, high-spirited games with many laughs shared.

Survivors include her sons, Gregory Shorter (Tracey) of Winamac, Steven Shorter (Chris) of Winamac, and daughter Amy Bailey (David) of Star City. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; Ashley Stemm (Tommy Coop) of Osceola, Brittni Bailey (Steve Kasten) of Winamac, Emily Campbell of Winamac, Andrea Sanson (Kenny) of Star City, Trent Shorter of Star City, Jamie Sells (Brandon) of Lakeville, Tiffani Shorter of Winamac, thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and one due in April; sister Carolyn Knebel of Indianapolis; grandson-in-law Tim Hoffa and granddaughter-in-law Brandi Shorter of Winamac.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Benny Ezra and Larry Ezra, sister, Shirley Peters, grandson, Michael Shorter and granddaughter, Christi Hoffa.

Visitation will be held Saturday, February 4th from 1-3pm at Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Home in Royal Center, funeral service to follow directly after with Pastor Jeff Seger officiating.

 It was Betty’s wishes to celebrate and honor the life of her late husband, Jim in conjunction with her service. We were unable to hold services at the time of his passing due to COVID.

Jerry Wayne Beaird 76, Rochester

Jerry Wayne Beaird 76, Rochester, passed away at 10:07 P.M. Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Indiana.

 

He was born on September 5, 1946 in Rochester, Indiana, the son of Chance Edward and Bertha Mae (McGee) Beaird. On November 21, 1964 in Rochester, Indiana, he married Janet Thomas and she survives.

 

Jerry retired from Rochester Metals and was a member of the Omega Church and Old Crossroad Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.

 

Survivors include his wife, Janet Beaird, Rochester, Indiana, children, James Eugene (Amy) Beaird, Niles, Michigan, Forrest Wayne (Mark Mow) Beaird, Logansport, Indiana, John Edward (Jennifer) Beaird, Rochester, Indiana, grandchildren, Wayne (Cassie) Beaird, Buchanan, Michigan, Cory Beaird, Colorado, Ashley Williams, Anderson, Indiana, Austin Weldy, Peru, Indiana, Breyanna Marie, Rochester, Indiana, great grandchildren, Mercedes Beaird, Deshawn Williams, Katana Williams, Corban Williams, Oreana Weldy, brother, Cyrus “Ed” Beaird, Rochester, Indiana, several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, George Clark, Jack Clark, Earl “Junior” Clark, John Clark, John L. O’Connor Jr., John Sweet, Patricia Thomas and Barbara Jean Ashelman.

 

No services are scheduled at this time.

Dwayne Milo Terry, 79, of Winamac

Dwayne Milo Terry, 79, of Winamac, passed away at 4:55 AM Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at White Oak Health Campus in Monticello. 

 

He was born on November 16, 1943 in Winamac, IN  to the late Gerald Milo “Red” Terry and Myrna Louise Poss Terry. 

 

Dwayne married Della Lorraine Dilts on December 21, 1963 in Winamac, IN. Della died on August 22, 1997. Dwayne married Beverly K. Beauchamp on June 28, 2003 in Winamac, IN. Beverly died March 23, 2014.

 

Dwayne was a farmer and truck driver. He loved his time working the land. Dwayne drove a Citgo Gas truck for many years. He was a very social person who touched many lives. Dwayne enjoyed participating in tractor pulls and drag racing. He loved to ride his motorcycle. Dwayne loved spending time with his family especially the little ones.

 

Dwayne was a member of the Moose Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles, VFW Auxiliary and First United Methodist Church in Winamac.

 

He is survived by:
