Three longtime Rochester Community School Corporation staff members celebrate retirement

Each has left their own mark on the Rochester Community School Corporation.

Barb Swank, Charlee Schwenk and Lisa McMillen celebrated their 2021 retirement with an official celebration Monday evening at the Rochester Learning Center.

Friends, family and coworkers gathered to honor the women. Welcoming guests to the celebration, Jana Vance, Rochester Community School Corporation Superintendent, started off by thanking McMillen for her 38 years of passion for music and her students. Vance said her help and direction with the renovations of the Rochester High School auditorium was a testament of McMillen's dedication.

Vance credited Charlee Schwenk for her 44 years of passion in teaching physical education. Schwenk, who started swimming classes at the Rochester Middle School pool, leaves a legacy of lifetime health that she not only taught, but also lives by.

Combining McMillen and Schwenk's years, Vance said the two have accounted for 75 years of education for RCSC.

Retiree Barb Swank was praised for her help in starting the Rochester Learning Center. Swank brought a wealth of knowledge of resources for special services and student services that the school corporation didn't previously have.

Jason Snyder, Columbia Elementary School Principal, shared a personal story about Schwenk's dedication and support she was known to give her students, both in and outside of class. Just before Snyder's daughter was to participate in a 5K run in South Bend, she discovered she had forgotten her running shoes at home. Luckily, Schwenk was there to save the day.

The three retirees continue to give back.  Superintendent Dr. Jana Vance.
