Rochester, Tippecanoe Valley open tennis postseason play, HS scoreboard

It's a 5:30 pm start for the Culver Acadamies boys tennis sectional Wednesday.  The four-team field features semifinal play as Rochester plays North Judson and Culver Academies plays Knox.

The championship is scheduled for Friday.

 

Tippecanoe Valley opens quarterfinal play Wednesday afternoon at the Warsaw sectional.  The Vikings play Whitko with the winner to meet Warsaw in a Friday semifinal.

 

Boys soccer

Mitchell Shafer and Carlos Plascencia scored goals for the Zebras.  RJ Keranko with two assists.

 

Parker Wallace had three saves on four shots on goal.

Sectional tennis brackets set at Culver Acadamies and Warsaw

Boys tennis teams around the state learned their postseason route Monday night during the IHSAA Boys Tennis State Tournament Pairings Show.

 

Rochester will battle three other programs this week for the Sectional 50 championship hosted by Culver Academies.

 

In the semifinals, Rochester will play North Judson with Culver Academies matching up with Knox.

 

Tippecanoe Valley will travel to Warsaw for Sectional 52 which features five programs.  The Vikings will open with Whitko.  The winner gets Warsaw in one semifinal.

 

Th other semifinal will pit Columbia City against Wawasee.

 

The sectional champions will advance to regional competition beginning Oct. 4.


Rochester golf team finished just four shots away from state finals; Tippecanoe Valley 7th in golf regional

The top three teams and top two individual players not on an advancing team are allowed to make the girls state golf finals from the regional weekend. 

 

Rochester missed it by just four strokes.

 

The Rochester golf team finished fourth at the Lake Central regional held at Sandy Pines Gold Club in DeMotte.  The Zebras’ 370 was four strokes behind third place Valparaiso who finished with a 366.

 

Penn claimed the regional title with a 340.  Host school Lake Central was second with 349.

 

Crown Point’s Kenzie Wilson shot a 79.  She’ll advance as an individual to the state finals with Brynlee DeBoard of Kankakee Valley who shot an 81.

 

Rochester’s Ava Thomas and Olivia Bradley were just two strokes off the pace.  Both shot an 83.  Teammate Payton Moore finished with a 91.

 

At the regional at Noble Hawk GC, hosted by East Noble, Culver Academy claimed the top spot with a 302 and will advance to the state finals with second place Homestead (315) and third place Carroll (318).

 

Tippecanoe Valley finished seventh as a team led by Madelyn Weaver’s 89 and Kaydence Mellott with a 91.

Soccer pairings set for upcoming IHSAA state tournament

A record number of boys and girls soccer teams will compete in the 29th Annual IHSAA Boys and Girls Soccer State Tournaments.

 

A total of 305 boys teams and 273 girls teams learned their opening-round sectional opponents Sunday night during the IHSAA’s state tournament draw. The previous record for participants was 301 for the boys in 2017 and 2019, and 272 girls teams in 2019.

 

Both tournaments mirror each other beginning with 16 sectionals in each of three classes running Oct. 3-8.

 

Regional semifinals will be played Oct. 12-13 with regional championships on Oct. 15.

 

Semistate champions will be determined on Oct. 22 at four sites with the winners advancing to the state championship matches Oct. 28-29 at Michael Carroll Stadium at IUPUI in Indianapolis.

 

This is the second year that a mid-week regional semifinal match will be played on the home field of one of the sectional winners. This year, the winners of the even-numbered sectionals will host a regional semifinal match on Wednesday (boys) and Thursday (girls) with all championship matches played at a pre-determined site on Saturday.

Wabash Sectional

Tippecanoe Valley will face the host, Wabash, in the opening round of Class 2A, Sectional 22. The winner will get Manchester in the semifinal round.

Rochester takes on No. 9 Culver Academies in its postseason opener. The winner will face the survivor of a battle between a pair of the top-15 ranked teams in the state -- No. 10 Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger and No. 13 Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran.

The Wabash Sectional champion will host the Maconaquah Sectional champion in the regional semifinal round.

Norwell is the host site for the regional championship match.

 

Argos Sectional

Argos is the host site for Class A, Sectional 37 featuring six teams.

In the postseason opener, Culver Community takes on Caston. The winner will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between No. 16 North White and North Miami.

In the other sectional semifinal round match, Argos battles Winamac for a spot in the championship match.

The Argos Sectional champion will travel to the winner of the Carroll (Flora) Sectional for a regional semifinal round match.

Taylor is the host site for the regional championship match.

 

Girls Tournament

Culver Academies Sectional

Tippecanoe Valley was the last team set into the six-team field in Class 2A, Sectional 22 and will face Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran in a semifinal match.

The sectional opens with Culver Academies hosting No. 5 Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger. The other quarterfinal match pits Garrett against No. 8 Leo.

The Culver Academies Sectional champion will host the Mississinewa Sectional champion in the regional semifinal round.

Norwell will host the regional championship match.

 

Argos Sectional

Argos, ranked No. 12 in the state coaches poll, will open Class A, Sectional 35 with a quarterfinal round match against No. 14 Trinity Greenlawn.

Culver Community will take on Bremen in the other quarterfinal round match with the winners meeting in the semifinal round.

The other semifinal round match features Rochester against LaVille.

The Argos Sectional champion will travel to the Westview Sectional champion for the regional semifinal.

Westview also is the regional championship match site.


Zebras - Vikings highlight Week 5 high school football slate

Rochester vs Tippecanoe Valley.  The rivalry would be enough.  Throw in the fact that both are undefeated entering Week 5 and you have a terrific battle atop the Three Rivers Conference standings.

Ruiz leads Tippecanoe Valley to soccer win over Rochester

With the countdown on to Friday's football battle between Rochester and Tippecanoe Valley, other athletic squads at the schools are matching up.

Jonathan Ruiz scored three times to lead the Viking to the victory.  Christian Ramirez added two goals.

Andreas Rosas scored a goal and added four assists.

 

For Rochester, Mitchell Shafer scored on a PK in the 1st half.  Teammate RJ Kerankohad a second half goal

 

The Zebras' Parker Wallace had 16 saves on 24 shots on goal.

Ron Shaffer recognized as Region 4 Coach of the Week by Indianapolis Colts

Rochester head football coach Ron Shaffer has been named one of the honorable mention regional coaches for the Colts/NFL Coach of the Week for Region 4.

 

Casey kolkman of Heritage High School was named the Colts/NFL Coach of the Week

 

The announcement by the Indianapolis Colts, presented by Center Point Energy, recognizes coaches in ten regions around the state.

 

Rochester (4-0, 3-0 TRC) plays at rival Tippecanoe Valley (4-0, 3-0 TRC) Friday in a key Three Rivers Conference showdown.  Coverage at 6:40 pm on 92.1, giant.fm and the GIANT fm app.

 

Maconaquah is also undefeated in conference play (3-1, 3-0 TRC). The Braves play at Peru (2-2, 2-1 TRC) on Friday.

 

 

344 to 346 - Maconaquah edges Rochester, Tippecanoe Valley for girls TRC golf title

Maconaquah claimed the girls TRC golf title Saturday.

 

It’s the second straight title for Maconaquah who narrowly got by both Rochester and Tippecanoe Valley by just two strokes.

 

Maconaquah posted a team low 344 led by sophomore medalist Daisy Williams with a 74.  She also won for the second straight year.

 

Rochester and Tippecanoe Valley finished with 346.

 

The Zebras placed three players in the top 10 who made all-conference.  Olivia Bailey shot a 77 for third place overall.  Teammate Ava Thomas was fifth with an 80.  Payton Moore was seventh with an 84.

 

Tippecanoe Valley also placed three players on the all-conference squad.  Madelyn Weaver shot a 79 for third place.  Molly Moriarity was eighth with an 87.  Kaydence Mellott shot an 88 for tenth place.

 

Rounding out the team scores,  Wabash Valley was fourth with 412, Northfield 420, Whitko 431, North Miami 451, Peru 459, Southwood 467, Manchester Inc.


Rochester, Tippecanoe Valley and Maconaquah tied atop TRC entering Week 4 football

Entering Week 4 of the high school football season there are three teams tied atop the Three Rivers Conference with unbeaten conference records.

 

Rochester, Tippecanoe Valley and Maconaquah are all 2-0 in conference play.  The Zebras (3-0, 2-0 TRC) are on the road tonight at Wabash (1-2, 1-2).

 

Last week’s win came easy for Rochester, on the field, with a 70-0 victory over Whitko.  It was getting to the field that proved to be the bigger challenge after storms earlier in the week knocked over the scoreboard at Barnhart Field. Hosting Homecoming and the 1987 state championship team meant it couldn’t be as simple as flipping home games with Whitko.

 

Head coach Ron Shaffer says he’s appreciative of everything that was done to make the home game happen.

 

 

For the game itself, it took limited plays for Rochester to overwhelm Whitko.

 

 

Shaffer expects a tougher challenge this week at Wabash.

Hoosier North schools Caston (0-3, 0-2 HN) and #15 (1A) Pioneer (1-2, 1-1 HN) play tonight at The Pit at Pioneer.

Caston has been outscored 124-22 through three games.

 

 

Culver (1-2) looks to bounce back from a loss to a strong, talented Knox team with a matchup against undefeated West Central (3-0).

Tonight, West Central may not be as physical as Knox but they bring speed on the outside.

 

 

West Central is trying for the program’s first winning season since 2014.

 

 

Winamac (1-2, 0-2 Hoosier North) won for the first time last week as the Warriors rushed for 378 yards and 10 yards per carry.

Cass was a distant second with 100.

 

Lakeland came in third followed by Pioneer, Winamac, West Central and Caston in the top seven.

 

Kolby Wegner from Winamac was third.  Austin Dague of Caston finished 11th.

 

Girls cross country

Winamac won the girls Caston Cross County Invitational by a narrow five poiints.  Winamac scored 50 as a team to get by South Bend Adams who finished with 55.

 

Carroll (Flora), Cass, North Judson, Triton and Caston were in the top seven teams of the 14-team field.  Culver Community was 12th.

 

Lexi Lawwill of SB Adams won event.  Margaret Smith of Winamac 5th

Mackenzi Roudebush was Caston's top finisher in 35th.

 

 

 

Rochester's Zoe Seward claimed a fourth place finish at the Manchester Invitational.  It was a personal best run of 19:39 for Seward.

Overall, Rochester had an incomplete score.

Tippecanoe Valley finished tenth overall in the 16-team field.

Golf

Two players reached par with another just a stroke behind as Rochester won a golf match in a four-team field Thursday.

 

Rochester’s Ava Thomas and Tippecanoe Valley’s Madelyn Weaver both shot par at Round Barn as the Zebras edged out the Vikings by four strokes in a four-way with Maconaquah and Southwood.

 

Thomas and Weaver tied for medalist honors with 36 to lead Rochester and Tippecanoe Valley, respectively.  The separation in team score came with the second highest individual score.  Rochester’s Olivia Bradley was just two strokes back with a 38 compared to the Vikings Kaydence Mellott who finished with a 45.

 

Rochester won the event with a team score of 170.  Tippecanoe Valley finished with a 174. 

 

Maconaquah was third, just a stroke back at 175, led by Daisy Williams with a 37.

 

Southwood finished fourth with 245.  Rowan Goodpasture topped the Southwood effort with a 52.
