Red Cross teams up with release of Meg 2: The Trench to encourage donors

After a summer of declining donations, the American Red Cross needs the public’s help to prevent a blood shortage.

When a donor makes and keeps an appointment to give blood in the weeks ahead, they can help ensure trauma patients, those undergoing cancer treatment, and people with lifelong blood disorders can get the blood they count on.

Right now, the Red Cross especially needs type O negative, type O positive and type B negative blood donors

Donors of all blood types can schedule an appointment to give by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visitingRedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

The Red Cross is teaming up with Warner Bros. for the theatrical release of Meg 2: The Trench to celebrate a summer of sharks and help stave off a summer blood and platelet shortage. All who come to give through August 12 will be automatically entered for a chance to win a three-night New York getaway for two with a private shark dive adventure at Long Island Aquarium. Those who come to give throughout the month of August will also get a $10 e-gift card to a movie merchant of their choice.

Details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Movie.

Northern Light display in Indiana not happening tonight after change of forecast

The anticipated solar storm that previously predicted the Northern Lights to be on display tonight has changed and will most likely not happen in Indiana.

According to an updated forecast released by The Space Weather Prediction Center, Indiana's odds to see a colorful display from the aurora borealis late Thursday evening is now low, and experts at SWPC say the hype was overblown.

Excitement hit the media earlier this week when Indiana was listed as one of the 17 American states that would be getting a chance to glimpse the Northern Lights Thursday evening, thanks to a solar storm forecast.

The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, are typically seen in Alaska, Canada and Scandinavia. An 11-year solar cycle that started in 2019 is expected to peak in 2024, however, making the lights visible in places further south, and potentially giving Indiana another chance for viewing in the future.  Just three months ago, the lights were visible in Arizona, making it the third severe geomagnetic storm since the latest solar cycle began.

The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks previously forecasted a colorful display of auroral activity Thursday for Alaska, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The reason behind the misguided excitement from last weekend has been tied to a 27 day forecast, but scientists say this is why the SWPC’s three-day forecast is the most reliable tool when predicting the Northern Lights. The SWPC says other forecasts outside of three days should instead be taken as a general guide.

Red Cross encourages blood donations through the holiday

The American Red Cross wants everyone to enjoy a safe and fun Fourth of July, which includes ensuring a strong blood supply for patients in hospitals across the country.

There has been a concerning shortfall in blood donations in recent weeks, and the upcoming holiday could put a further strain on donations, as millions celebrate with family vacations and other seasonal activities. Donors of all blood types, especially those with type B negative or O negative blood as well as platelet donors, are needed to make an appointment to give now to ensure blood remains available for patients this summer.

To encourage blood donations, the Red Cross is offering the following to those who come to give in the coming weeks:

All who come to give blood, platelets or plasma through June30 will receive a $10 gift card by email to a merchant of their choice. Those who come to give in June will also be automatically entered for a chance to win a backyard theater package. Details for both offers can be found at RedCrossBlood.org/June.

All who come to give blood, platelets or plasma July 1-11 will receive an exclusive Red Cross dry bag, while supplies last. Details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/gifts.

By scheduling and keeping appointments right now, donors can help ensure patients relying on blood donations also get to enjoy their summer.

To schedule an appointment to donate, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
